Statement of Purpose, Scholarship Policy, and Process

Statement of Purpose ( revised 2022)

The members of NPSI want to encourage and support psychotherapists interested in psychoanalysis to apply to psychoanalytic training in order to foster the study and practice of psychoanalysis. We recognize that completing the training can be financially challenging. With that in mind, we offer a scholarship program to Psychoanalytic Training candidates, intended to partially offset the costs of completing the program.

Scholarship awards are based on the principles of Equity and Trust. We recognize that candidates face individual circumstances and have varying amounts of need compared to other candidates and over time. We trust candidates to request the amount of financial support they honestly require.

Funding

The Scholarship program is funded through donations, including matching donations during our membership renewal period, and from a percentage of the proceeds from Special Events.

Scholarship Policy

1.     Eligible candidates are those who have begun psychoanalytic training at NPSI, are in their second, third or fourth year of classes, have received no more than two previous scholarships (priority given to first-time applicants), and are in good standing with NPSI (i.e. progressing appropriately). Candidates in their first year of classes may apply for a scholarship after the first term completed, on an emergency basis.

2.     Scholarships awarded shall fund up to one term’s tuition per recipient per academic year (based on expected enrollment in clinical seminars, didactic and infant observation), and must be used for the cost of Psychoanalytical Training tuition. Awards are always subject to Scholarship Fund balance, and candidates may not receive the full amount requested.

3.     Candidates may receive scholarships no more than three times during candidacy; first time applicants will be given priority.

4.     Scholarships will not require repayment and are not considered loans.

5.     Leading from our principles of Trust and Equity, Scholarship awards are based on need, which is best determined by the candidate. Therefore, we assume that a candidate who applies for a scholarship is in need of financial support, and we rely on the candidate to indicate the amount and timing of funding requested.

Scholarship Process

·       Each academic year by June 30 a notice will be sent to eligible NPSI candidates informing them of the opportunity to apply for a scholarship.

·       Mid-year applications may be submitted by any candidate on an emergency basis.

·       Applicants will send a completed application to the Administrative Manager. The Administrative Manager will respond to the candidate acknowledging receipt of application.  The Administrative Manager will inquire of the Progression Committee if the candidate is in good standing, and will confirm which year of training the candidate is in and whether any scholarships have been awarded previously. After confirming this information, the Administrative Manager will remove the name and email address of the candidate and send the application to the Scholarship Committee, which will be made up of the Finance Committee and Director of Training.

·       Every effort will be made by the Administrative Manager, Progression Committee and Scholarship Committee to maintain applicant confidentiality.

·       Scholarships will be decided and candidates notified no later than one month after the application is determined to be eligible.

·       There will be no exchange of money in the awarding of a scholarship. Instead, the candidate will not be charged tuition up to the scholarship amount. The NPSI treasury fund will be paid by the scholarship fund on behalf of the candidate awarded the scholarship.
