May 2018 Scientific Meeting

May 16, 2018

 Title: “Winnicott's Words:
Lexicon, Language and Key Concepts in 'On the Basis for Self in Body'”

Presenters: Dana Blue, LICSW, FIPA and
Barbara Sewell, MaMFC, MDIV, MRE, MIPA

The May Scientific Meeting is the third in a series NPSI is offering this spring for those interested in our Twelfth International Evolving British Object Relations Conference on "The Body as Psychoanalytic Object: Clinical Applications from Winnicott to Bion and Beyond" (October 12-14, 2018). Rather than a typical scientific presentation, this meeting will function as a study group oriented to the conference theme.

Contemporary practice emphases mind-body psychotherapy as if it was a new idea, but it is not; connections between psyche and soma have been, and continue to be creatively explored by many in the psychoanalytic field. At our May Scientific Meeting, Dana Blue and Barbara Sewell will consider Winnicott's particular use of language as revealed in the 1970 paper "On the Basis for Self in Body". We will work with the group to determine his meanings of words (such as psyche, soma, personalization, and illusion), his concepts (including good enough mother, the environment, transitional objects and spaces); the interrelationship of these concepts and the implications for one's relationship to one's body in a therapeutic process.

Learning objectives:

1.    Participants will acquire a basic understanding of Winnicott's language.

2.    Participants will acquire definitions for key Winnicottian concepts.

3.    Participants will acquire ideas for how this language is embodied in Winnicott's work.
