Supporting our members, offering outstanding psychoanalytic training to mental health professionals, and educating the general public about psychoanalysis since 1999.

The Society

Introduction

The Society offers a professional home for our psychoanalyst members, candidates of the Institute, and interested community participants. The Society provides a forum for ongoing discourse, learning, and association between members and with the professional public on a variety of psychoanalytic topics through the organization of conferences, scientific meetings, and psychoanalytic publications.

Membership

The Society offers three categories of membership:

  1. Active (psychoanalyst member)
  2. Affiliate (candidate member)
  3. Community

Active members are IPA-certified psychoanalysts who have been elected to the Society by vote of the membership. Analyst members participate in the governance of the Society, serve on committees, teach in the Institute, and facilitate operation of the organization. Members enjoy benefits including fee reductions at special events and are invited to present original papers at NPSI Scientific Meetings. All members are members of the Confederation of Independent Psychoanalytic Societies (CIPS) and Fellows of the International Psychoanalytical Association (FIPA). Affiliate members are candidates enrolled in psychoanalytic training at the NPSI Institute. Candidates serve on committees and offer valuable feedback to the Society at candidate-faculty meetings. Candidates may also attend special events and receive publications at reduced rates. Candidate members are automatically granted complimentary affiliate membership in CIPS until graduation. Other CIPS membership benefits include complimentary membership in the International Psychoanalytical Studies Organization (IPSO) and reduced rates for access to the Psychoanalytic Electronic Publishing (PEP) database.To read more about these benefits, click here[.pdf Document].

Upon completing training, graduates may apply for active membership in the Society and are accepted by vote of the membership. For a roster of current candidates, click here.

Community members are defined by their interest in psychoanalysis and desire to support the scientific and educational activities of the Society. Community members include psychotherapists and allied health professionals (medical doctors, physician’s assistants, nurses, and so on); journalists, editors and writers; actors and playwrights; and others whose work may be enhanced by a deeper understanding of the psychic reality and human mental life. Community members receive a discount on registration at special events and on publication subscriptions and may volunteer on some committees.  For a roster of community members, click here.

Scientific Meetings

Scientific Meetings feature original paper presentations by our psychoanalyst, candidate and community members and provide a venue for discussion and debate of evolving psychoanalytic theory and its application in clinical practice. At each gathering, held monthly during the academic year, a paper is presented followed by commentary from an analyst colleague followed by group discussion. The meetings are open to members of the Society and other mental health professionals (including graduate students in medicine, nursing, psychology, social work, and other mental health disciplines) interested in learning more about psychoanalysis, generally, and the British object relations approach, in particular. For those who may be considering advanced training in psychoanalysis, these meetings provide an excellent way of getting to know our analyst members, most of whom also teach in the Institute.

Our Mission

Our mission is to

  1. Deliver premier psychoanalytic education and training for individuals aspiring to become psychoanalysts and psychoanalytically informed psychotherapists, with a dedicated focus on British Object Relations theory, the work of Wilfred Bion, and contemporary Post-Bionian clinical practice;
  2. Foster the ongoing professional growth and development of our analyst members, candidates, and community members through rigorous scholarship, mentorship, and collegial exchange;
  3. Advance regional, national, and international understanding of mental life by contributing original thought and research to the evolving field of psychoanalysis; and
  4. Promote emotional health, creativity, and well-being for those we serve through the ethical and compassionate practice of psychoanalysis.
