Description

May 2025: “Everything You Always Wanted to Know about Sex, Laplanche, and Soul Weaving (but were afraid to ask)” Presented by: Michael Levin, PsyD Please join us for the first in a series of three Pre-EBOR scientific meetings, where Michael Levin will offer a lucid and inviting introduction to the thought of Jean Laplanche. This presentation also provides an illuminating overview of the part played by Laplanche’s work in the psychoanalytic theory developed in Here I'm Alive: The Spirit of Music in Psychoanalysis, co-authored by Adam Blum, Peter Goldberg, and Michael Levin. This meeting is especially designed for colleagues who may be less familiar with Laplanche’s ideas. Levin will trace the foundational elements of his work, offering a meaningful entry point ahead of the upcoming Fourteenth International Evolving British Object Relations (EBOR) Conference: Live From Seattle: The Music of Psychoanalysis (October 17-19, 2025), where he and his co-authors will each present plenary addresses. Learning Objectives: Upon completing this scientific meeting, participants will be able to: 1. Describe and discuss Jean Laplanche's theory of the origin of the "apparatus of the soul" within the framework of his General Theory of Seduction. 2. Describe and discuss Jean Laplanche's theory of the differentiation and development of the "apparatus of the soul" within the framework of his General Theory of Seduction. 3. Describe and discuss the role of Jean Laplanche's work in the theory presented in the book Here I'm Alive; The Spirit of Music in Psychoanalysis (Columbia University Press, 2023).
