March 2018 Scientific Meeting

March 21, 2018

Title: “When the Body is a Clinical Fact

Presenter:  Robert Oelsner, MD, FIPA

This Scientific Meeting is the first in a series NPSI is offering this spring for those interested in our Twelfth International Evolving British Object Relations Conference on "The Body as Psychoanaltyic Object: Clinical Applications from Winnicott to Bion and Beyond" (October 12-14, 2018).

In this meeting Robert Oelsner, MD, FIPA will focus on the body as a theater of meaning and how meaning gets to be somaticized and possibly extracted from the body. Some argument will be made in favor of a skilled and detailed observation of the totality of the patient's presentation in the analytic hour. This may enable both analyst or psychotherapist and patient to gain insight into the underlying psycho-somatic dramas; transference and countertransference being the medium in which unconscious meaning emerges. The unveiling of hidden or barely formed representations frees up the body from the burden of symptoms and furthers the development of the thinking mind. This theoretical framework is based on Klein, Bion, Meltzer and the contemporary British object relations school of psychoanalysis.

Learning objectives:

1. Participants will acquire some skill to observe somatic as well psychic presentations in the analytic hour.

2. Participants will gain understanding of emotions and phantasies located in the body.

3. Participants will learn about the ways in which rudimentary unconscious phantasies expressed in somatic phenomena may cross over to the psyche enriching mental functioning and mastery through thinking.

4. Participants will learn about tools for working with psychosomatic patients that the contemporary British object relations school of psychoanalysis provides.
